Half-up and half-down hairstyle
This classic hairstyle gets a glamorous upgrade thanks to loads of volume. But don’t get it twisted, it still offers the same benefits as the looks from your teenage years. “The great thing about a half-up and half-down style is that it takes the hair out of the face without being completely pulled back,” says celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons. He explains that with this hairstyle it’s all about versatility, noting that it’s simple enough to allow for creative updates—especially with longer lengths.

Tousled updo
Tousled updos à la Brigitte Bardot are particularly trendy right now. The style is the perfect balance of effortless and elegant without looking too overdone. To master a swoon-worthy updo, Moroccanoil artistic director Cassie Siskovic says you need to begin with a classic high bun. “Using this as the base eliminates so much work and creates the perfect foundation for pinning the rest of your hair up.” Her pro tip: don’t be afraid to make a mess. “The key is making it look purposeful but effortless. Leave some face-framing pieces out in the front and a few baby accents in the back,” she says.

Barbie ponytail
There is absolutely no denying the power of a sleek, slicked-back ponytail. Not only does it offer a polished look, but it also keeps your hair out of your face on hot days. To nail this style, Fitzsimons notes that position is everything. Whether you’re opting for a high pony or a middle style, he says centering the base of the pony first is key. “Once you secure it with an elastic, you can add lift or smooth it out, and of course, tame the flyaways with hairspray and a fine tooth comb.” If you want to add a bit more length, you can always use a ponytail extension like Fitzsimon’s latest collaboration, the BELLAMI x Andrew Fitzsimons “The Ponytail” ($195).

Elegant top-knot
Tighter topknots like this require a sturdy base and a handful of products to ensure they stay intact. Creating structure is essential and keeps the final style from looking bulky. “Most women with long hair don’t like updos because they feel their hair will be too heavy or won’t last, but with the right foundation that won’t be an issue,” says hairstylist Sophie Rose Gutterman. She recommends implementing braids and twists into the style to secure it and to give you control when creating the shape.

’90s Prom updo
’90s prom hairstyles are back and better than ever. They’re perfect for special occasions but also work well to dress up a casual jeans and t-shirt outfit. In this look, volume is key to giving the bouffant a lifted look. For a relaxed yet polished look, Fitzsimons suggests using a texturizing spray and leaving a few pieces down in front to frame the face.

Romantic waves
If a towering style doesn’t suit you, try this midi-bun look instead. It features soft waves effortlessly swept together for a romantic feel. “A simple bun can have a completely different appearance by pulling out pieces and giving them some definition,” says Gutterman. She recommends using a mix of products to get the look just right. “Gel is ideal for creating a smooth and sleek base, while a texturizing spray will add definition,” she says. To finish, she suggests using a hairspray, like SexyHair Hairspray ($23), for a natural finish and touchable hold.
